Temperate Grasslands Conservation Initiative
Review:
As stated in the article only a fraction of the World's grasslands, that are so valuable, are protected under acts and agreements between countries. Many of these grasslands aren't even in the United States and this is causing extreme habitat loss. I believe to maintain a balance of conservation on production of oil the government of these foreign countries should make agreements that tells farmers and oil company owners they can only use a section of land during a certain period of time. This will allow the other grasslands to grow while one is being torn down and after using that piece of land for grazing, farming, or oil drilling they should have to put in efforts for rebuilding it and give it time to regrow. This will allow farmers to do their job while also protecting the land for future generations. I also believe these countries need to deny the proposal of building railroads and roads through these grasslands. This will completely disturb the vital remaining grasslands and will also decrease population of the animals that live there due to accidents with trains hitting animals and cars hitting animals. The grasslands are home to thousands of species in the world and they are currently decreasing due to human disruption. I believe to do our part as humans we need to protect and conserve the grasslands of the world with agreements between countries and their citizens.
Main Ideas:
Article 1- Globally grasslands are protected, but not enough to sustain a healthy environment for the animals that live there. This article also talks about how countries are protecting parts of the grasslands but they aren't protecting the most crucial parts of the grasslands. It also talks about the role of women in these countries and how we can use their role in the society to the advantage of saving the land.
Article 2- This article talks about the abuse farmers are causing to the land by making pastoral farming as range land. this is causing some of the remaining grasslands to disappear in places such as Mackenzie Country, New Zealand, and it is also causing land to be unhealthy from the new grasses. the old grasses kept water in the soil and also helped with erosion.
Article 3- this article focuses on the building of rail roads and roads across the grasslands. It specifically focuses on Central Asia and the use of these areas as natural resources. By using these areas it causes the land to be cut in half by transportation and also disrupts untouched wildlife.
Article 4- This article talks about a large milestone reached lately. A document was created in six different languages allowing countries to communicate about the problem of wildlife disruption. This is a large milestone and now countries can come together and create new laws for grasslands if necessary.
Article 5- This article focuses on the use of native people to try to control grassland conservation efforts. By using the native people it will create a partnership between the government and the peasants and allow for them to keep their land and remained protected under the supervision of the government.
Article 6- This article talks about Canada using land that has been protected for many years and leasing it out to local farmers to use as farm land. do this it will ruin the land and destroy the protected grasslands of Canada.
Article 7- This article talks about how vital the grasslands are to birds and if the grasses are destroyed the birds will no longer have a place to live and will ultimately die or migrate to a new area. These birds play a role in the ecosystem and if they are lost the whole thing may come crumbling down.
Article 8- This article talks about how little grassland is protected on legislation of the United States. It also shows what we are currently doing to save our countries land and shows how much more we need to do to save it.
Connections/Contradictions:
All of these articles show how important the grasslands are to the world. they also all agree that governments around the world need to do something about the conservation and protection of the grasses and the species that live in it. some articles agree that the grassland should be conserved rather than destroyed to use for human resources, while others believe it will help our generation gain important materials and allow small country farmers to earn a living. while these articles contradict each other in some ways they all believe that grasslands are important for survival and may need to be protected a little more.
Reflection:
I believe grasslands and the animals that live in them deserve to be protected due to their importance to society. Governments should place regulations and laws into place to protect these lands and animals, because it will allow the animals to stay living and also allow the future of the world. governments should also involve natives because this will set a pathway for future generations because if their children see them saving the grasslands they may follow in their footsteps and save it for future generations. I believe grasslands are vital to the worlds survival and they are rapidly decreasing all over the world. Government need to step up to the plate and protect the plants and animals that cant protect themselves.
